What is Gayong?

One of my favorite question when learning with Gayong Masters is asking them what is really "Gayong" definition, from his own perspective or understanding. I had many answers though. Whether they come from my readings online or books, from discussions with Gayong practitioners, or from my direct encounters with old masters. Some of them talked about the term Gayong/Gayung itself in Bahasa Melayu, so in the Kamus Dewan Bahasa online, it has 2 definitions :

1) The first one is the water container with a handle, a tool which is used to wash up, originally made from a coconut shell with a stick.

2) The second definition is quite broad;
i) whether is a stick used as a weapon;
ii) . hit, slash, stab, etc (with a weapon); playing Silat martial arts (Boxing etc);
iii). Ilmu/Kebatinan, mantra to hurt (kill etc) people from afar; ~
iv)  Technique to avoid enemy attacks or
v) Argument, debate, words used to answer people's conversations; ~ tua, ~ cut off prb saying that old people are usually right;
vi) bergayung, bersilat (actions/verbs of practicing Silat)
vii) "Gayong people" , as Malay expression : as the "kundi" seeds on the tray; just a group of wise people;
viii)  1. cut, stab, spear etc. (with a weapon); 2. say spells to kill enemies etc. (Dean's Dictionary Fourth Edition)

Helped by the Google translate, I tried to edit few words from the original meaning taken from Kamus Dewan.

[ga.yung] | ݢايوڠ

Definisi 1 : pencedok air drpd tempurung dsb yg bertangkai, sibur. (Kamus Dewan Edisi Keempat)

Definisi 2 : 1. sl sj tongkat yg dipakai sbg senjata; 2. pukulan, tetakan, tikaman, dll (dgn senjata); main ~ bersilat (bertinju dll); 3. = ilmu ~ sj mantera utk menyakitkan (membunuh dll) orang dr jauh; ~ bersambut kata berjawab prb mengelakkan serangan musuh atau menjawab percakapan orang; ~ tua, ~ memutus prb cakap orang tua-tua biasanya benar; bergayung bersilat (bertikam dll); orang ~ sama pandai sama bak kundi atas dulang prb sama arif dan bijaksana; menggayung 1. menetak, menikam, menombak dll (dgn senjata); 2. mengucapkan mantera utk membunuh musuh dll. (Kamus Dewan Edisi Keempat)

Some of Masters said "Gayong" was the name of an invincible Malay warrior. Some of them revealed that
it came from an old Ilmu named "Ibu Gayong". This ilmu actually to be believed used by Almarhum Dato' Laksamana Hang Tuah to defeat Taming Sari during the epic combat-to-death of both of them when Malacca Sultanate delegation visited Majapahit Kingdom. It is claimed that Hang Tuah used the "4 lethal Ilmu" which are "Ibu Gayong Sendi Gedang Tunggal", "Semar Alam Tunggal", "Belah Bumi Kipas Nandung", and "Raja Kipas Nandung".

Soalan:"Dengan langkahan persilatan yang manakah Datuk gunakan bagi menikam Tamingsari?"Hang Tuah:"Datuk gunakan langkahan ibu gayong sendi gedang tunggal, semar alam tunggal, belah bumi kipas nandung, raja kipas nandung."

But the deeper I learn from these old Masters, the deeper understanding about "Gayong" I gain. In the Silat Seni Gayong perspective, "Silat" is all the external self defense techniques. The old Masters loved to coined the term "Seni 349" which covers all the locks (Kuncian), strikes (Pukulan & Kombat), grappling (Kunci Hidup), Weapons, and all the variations (Pecahan). Normally the Red belt, which symbolize the "Blood and Bravery" of a Pendekar, is awarded to the a brave and very skillful Silat fighter. Nowadays, due to modernization, the Red Belt simply represents a Silat practitioner who completed his/her Red belt syllabus, and performed well during his/her belt grading. Although most of places have "diluted" their requirement to gain this belt, I personally know few Gelanggangs which still stick to the traditions and refuse to follow the modern methods. In these Gelanggang, if we are not trained well enough in the free-fight, even though having few Dans in Black Belt, we could get ass kicked by their red belt students. The modern style of learning the syllabus, with static response, is good for basic learning in Gayong. Historically, it was created to make it safe to teach to the school students. It hels lot in creating good body conditioning, and coordination. It helps in promoting Gayong all over the country, with most of Gayong class skips the "Sparring" session. Some Gelanggang has the "sparring" session, but more on the "Silat Olahraga", which slowly has changed many of old styles. It used to be one of a must module in the traditional Gayong teaching. Without these, we are creating a generation of Gayong instructors who are not skillful in fighting, which are indeed the contrary of the main purpose learning it in the first time ; to defend ourselves. By the way, what I wanted to say is these are all covered under the name of "Silat", the first phase in Silat Seni Gayong.

The "Seni" in the other hand, refers to the "internal" self defense techniques. Being a Silat master in Malaysia, and throughout of Nusantara, where the black magic practices are still exist, learning the internal-self defense is a must. These wouldn't be an issue, as far as I can see, teaching martial art in the western country. But being a Silat teacher in Malaysia, one must get ready to be challenged into a fight, whether physically, or internally. We use the term "Ilmu Kebatinan", referring to the mystique arts, based on Holy Book of Quran, tradition Mentera (Mantra), Rukyah/Bomoh (Exorcism), Nafas (respiration), Rewani (unconscious mind), Mimpi (dreams), and certain kind of ritual and ceremony etc. I experience myself, and witness many of my circles, being challenged by these black magics. The practices of Kebatinan in Silat and also in Perubatan (Malay Traditional Healing) are quite controversial especially in Malaysia where Islam is the official religion of the country and Islam prohibit the practices of "Sihir" (Black Magic). That's why some of religious Gayong Masters, who have the deep knowledge regarding these matters, have presented the Kebatinan practices in Gayong to the Islamic Authorities in different states and found out that they don't contradict against Islamic laws. The old Masters loved to share their knowledge and secrets with the loyal and truthful disciples. It is indeed the responsibility of Gayong Masters to help the students by stepping in himself, or asking help from other expert from his entourage. An enemy could send you a "Santau", a wind-transported black magic, into your plate. Those who ate the Santau will had an internal bleeding in the body and will vomit blood, and could cause death, if not treated quickly. A man perverted man who wants to have power on every women he sees will use the "Minyak Dagu", (Chin Oil). He has to dig up the grave of certain dead body, cut the head off, and burn the chin of until getting the oil from it, reciting the Mantra with the name of certain Jin/Satan, and complete it with some other rituals to get the power. It is so powerful that any girl that is touched even with a bit of the oil will forget everything and become his slave. It is common too that someone lost in the jungle, or mountain because they accidentally trespassing into the "Bunian" village, a half-breed of creature from Human and Jinn. These are just 3 lessons from many others that every Gayong practitioner who intend to become a Master should know and learn how to protect, to help, and to cure. The "training" of Seni part is very different from the Silat part. The main component is the Zikir, and the first requirement is to recite the "Qulhu" for 70 000 times. When only finishing the process, the disciple will be allowed to continue and to explore in this "Seni" phase. That is why in this level, is it associated with the Yellow belt. The yellow color comes from the Royal color, and also the curcuma (Turmeric), as one of the main healing and cooking ingredient in Malay culture. It represent the "Sakti" (Magic) and mysticism, and proceeds as the second phase "Seni" in the Silat Seni Gayong.

The final phase, or our final destination as Anak Gayong, is to arrive to "GAYONG". Gayong is Black, that represent the shadow. Shadows doesn't have any color of your skin, or your clothes, or you ranks. Everyone, human being, mountains, trees, any object, will have the same color of shadow. It symbolize the "spirit being", a true form of human being and all other creatures. The journey through "Silat" as a fighter-soldier, and through "Seni" as a wizard-sorcerer, living constantly in conflict to survive in the human and invisible world, we cannot imagine the ego build up in our spirit. This is the most crucial phase that one has to achieve, without doing so, one could easily drown in his material and worldly-fame and pleasure. The journey to the Gayong is the real destination, where the "train" would have few stops in different stations to refill the coal, or waiting the change of railway track. We as the passenger could go outside, taking few minutes break under a tree shade, while drinking a mango juice bought from the hawker. No matter how comfortable we feel at that moment, we must not stay there the moment the train resume its journey. We must get back to our seat, or else, left behind and with no way finding the "true" destination. We can taste and enjoy all the life during the journey, but never confuse it with the original purpose. The true destination is to know who really are we. To see it, to know it. Those who stops the journey before the final destination, would probably be happy in his/her life here, for a short period of times, but will miss a great purpose of his/her existence. The old masters sometimes would say "Whoever knows himself, knows his Lord. And whoever knows his Lord, everything will disappear". This is the final phase that each Anak Gayong has to at least arrive at it's door, open it, and look how beautiful the place is. The beauty of this phase will make all the worldly problems seems so light and manageable, and none of positions, ranks, belts, sandangs, influences or supporters, could replace the "Gayong". Those who are still in Silat phase, will think that HPCS7 is the ultimate purpose of Gayong, while those who are still in Seni phase, will think the Sandang Waris Amanah will make him become the strongest and the most respectful Gayong Master. But the reality is that these are only the tests for us. We must take a good care, whether we hold in only in our hands, or we position them dearly in our heart. Those who turns away from the beauty of world, will find the sweetness in being with his Lord.

And for me, I don't really know how long more my journey continues. But as long as I am still breathing, I will keep my seat in this train, till the day it stops for eternity...

New chapter: Gelanggang Battle Owls (Burung Hantu) @Toulouse

BismillahirRohmanirRohim

From Kuala Pahang to Toulouse

This is the only 20 minutes I have tonight (before going to bed!) so that I think I'll try at least update my blog. My past few months (and years) in Malaysia, all of my Silat activities had been updated more in our Naga Rantau page , Silat Seni Gayong France page, or even on my personal FB account. My blog was little bit forgotten then and I think it's good for me now to start blogging again for my personal de-stress methodology! lol

Here I am, being a student again in this country that meant a lot for me. Alhamdulillah. New place, new mission, and new condition. Everything is different then. I was single. Then married to my beloved wife. And now I am now with my wife and 2 kids. And of course, with a lot of workload in research now it is strangely fun and stressful at the same time lol. I am actually on my phd at l'Institut de l'Aeronautique et de l'Espace (ISAE-SUPAERO) and as the consequence, spending more time on the fundamentals (something I was not so fan years ago!).

So here again we discussed a lot for the planning for these coming years of Gayong France. InsyaAllah. We are aiming to develop more of Silat Seni Gayong in France, and into few countries close by  with the colaboration with PSSGM in Malaysia and Gayong UK (Cikgu Ariffin, Cikgu Jazwan). We are also aiming to visit our family in United States hopefully our plan could be granted insyaAllah (Yes Cikgu Sam, Cikgu Shamsul, Cikgu Joel n Cikgu Jen). We need paperworks! lol

My most hectic and the last month in Malaysia:

I was also visited by my Gayong brothers Hamid, Kareem, and Bruno Hamzah when I was in Malaysia. Their main destination: Cikgu Awang Daud's house!

Belt Grading for Gayong France (AFSSG)

After our last achievement in Malaysia of the first Anak Gayong Perancis , Cikgu Stephane who had successfully pass his 1st Dan of Black Belt of Silat Seni Gayong, and also a great performance of our Srikandi Cikgu Mathilde Becquin of her 3rd Dan Red Belt, we are now concentrating to strengthen Gayong France especially we are now developping in south of France. Both of Cikgu Stephane and Cikgu Mathilde are certified instructors in the North of france. David Bossu and Gullaime La Rocha who went to Malaysia for training also had successfully their Green Belt. Guillaume had been spending his 6 months training in Kuala Pahang, especially at Gelanggang UMP Naga Rantau.

Gelanggang Pendita Bunian @ Mauguio

We had successfully organized the Kerambit seminar in Mauguio of Gelanggang Silat Seni Gayong "Pendita Bunian" last Octobre, and alhamdoulillah this weekend we had our first official Silat Seni Gayong class in Toulouse. Exceptionally for the first class we are having two days seminar.

We are organizing more seminars in the future: Toulon, Aix en Provance, Paris, Lille etc. So keep in touch! For those who are interested in learning the traditional art of Silat Seni Gayong, or just a combat-self defense class, please feel free to contact us. Any information is available on facebook, or by email.

Our training @ Gelanggang Battle Owls (Toulouse), is on every Saturday afternoon at 2pm-4pm at Residence Akerys, 12 rue Jacqueline Auriol, 31400 Toulouse.  For the time being we have one class per week, insyaAllah after December we will have a second class that will be performed in the university. Hopefully, the least thing we could offer is this beautiful art of Silat for those who are interested.

Second Day training

NEW ERA FOR MARTIAL ART IN MALAYSIA

Seni Silat and Seni Beladiri have existed in Malaysia since the very beginning of the first settlers. It starts due to the harsh condition of life, with regular confrontation of the wild animals, pirates, villains, and many factors. Eventhough the Malay people had the great empires and civilization , such as Chermin, Grahi, Patanni Besar, Kelantan Besar, Langkasuka, Gangga Nagara, Malacca, Srivijaya, Majapahit or many others, but it doesn't protect the people from fighting each others in the wars. With one of the region in the world that has the most ethnicity of different language, dialect, culture, tradition, and belief, the confrontation among the people is unavoidable.

I am not sure whether nowadays in Malaysia, there is MORE Malay who practice Silat or MORE who is not. But the peaceful and stable social-economical makes more Malaysian have times and capabilities to learn and practice the martial art, especially the Seni Silat. Due to the continuing effort of the Warriors, the Pendekars, the Panglimas and Srikandis, the Mahagurus and Guru Utamas, that fully sacrifice to serve the nation in keeping the tradition, with a little help from the nation medias, the trends is going up. In Malaysia, more and more association and federation, born to keep this tradition. PESAKA, DSSM, HIKMAH, SRIKANDI, MPM, PEWARIS, etc. are among the movers that creates new energy for the survival of Melayu nation.

YB Dato' Seri Haji Ismail bin Abd Mutallib

One of important players is MAGMA, stands for Malaysian Martial Art Grandmasters Association.It regroups all of the Grandmasters and masters of different background in one platform. One of the effort that MAGMA do since the beginning is to push the Malaysian Government to recognize the martial art grandmasters, especially those old master who is almost forgotten eventhough he was once a warrior for the country independence.

Many proposals had been sent, many paperwork had been rejected. If it is not due to the heart of steel of those grandmasters, I am sure we had give up long time ago. However, with the co-operation between MAGMA that represents the big martial art associations with the Ministry of Human Resource under the Malaysia Skill Department, has finally worth of waiting and fighting. ( It is not an easy way to arrive. They had all the misery and bad experience. )

For the first time ever, the Malaysian Government had recognize the martial art practitioner in Malaysia by delivering the Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (Malaysia Skill Certificate) of level 1 to 3 under the title of "Martial Art Co-ordination". Adding to the values, those who are eligible , could take the examination for the DKM (Malaysia Skill Diploma) of level 4 and 5. This is not a certificate which is delivered by the association or individual, but an official certificate delivered by the Government body that is useful for the martial art practitioner to apply for job in the domain.

The best thing is that the UniSHAHPUTRA, one of the popular private university in Malaysia has grabbed this chance to offer the course in their university. 3 years course for a Diploma in Martial Art. The truth is that we need to have the demand of the course from the market to make this successful. That's why every sectors, public or private must help to boost the demand of this course. The MOU had been signed between SHAHPUTRA under it's founder Dato' Dr. Haji Azman Abd Ghanie, and co-founder Datin Hajjah Suzieyati Haji Adham, with the founder of MAGMA, Grandmaster Azlan Abd Ghanie whois also the owner of SENIBELADIRI magazine and Guru Utama of Silat Melayu Lok 9. This meaningful event was witnessed by the Malaysia Deputy Minister of Human Resource himself YB Dato' Seri Haji Ismail Abd Mutallib, and all of the Martial Arts Grandmasters and practitioners especially from Pahang. Our ceremony was cherished by the demonstration by many Silat groups, and also my small group of PSSGM Universiti Malaysia Pahang. It was an event that I want to part of as it marks a new era for the Martial Art world in our country.

I am very happy and see this chance as a great opportunity in the future. The martial art practitioner is not more considered as a part-timer and hobby activities, but instead it can be your professional job to make life and getting paid in a standard rate depending on your academic level. I see the future, when the Martial Art is not only available in the Diploma level. For those academician, who are born with the skills in martial arts will push the limit by making it in the Bachelor's Degree level. Of course it will be a very long way before we can achieve that. Such the Master and PhD, of course much much much more works, money and time needed. Martial Art is a very large and versatile subject. For the research, conference and journals, much could be covered in the Martial Arts. The History , the Language, the Culture, the Philosophy, the Sufism, the Theology, the Techniques, the Weapons, the Healing Technique, the Safety Aspect, the War Strategy, the Communication, the Martial Art Engineering, the Training Tools and much more, are those subject which is still open for the research. All of us can contribute our research in the "IJMAAD" (Oh yes, I suggest you this name: "International Journal of Martial Arts and Associated Diciplines", cool isn't it?). Imagine one day we will be able to present our paper in a "International Martial Art Conference". ;). That's is one step further in the future where the Government and private sector appreciate and recognize the importance of this field. And what we need is a grant for research! ;)

Perhaps there are certain people who are quite cynical with the martial art studies. But as long as I am concerned, martial art is a study about the human it self. To know your self. To know your potential. To know your strength and weakness. I do hope my entry here would give you some ideas and motivation. Grab the chance. For those who already have their experience and a practitioner of Silat Seni Gayong, you can have the details here:
